Math & reading standards and testing in Alaska

Updated June 2026

Alaska never formally adopted Common Core, instead using its own ELA and Math standards that cover similar grade-level skills. Students in grades 3-9 take the AK STAR assessment in reading/writing and math each spring.

Does Alaska hold kids back in 3rd grade for reading?

No. The Alaska Reads Act requires reading improvement plans for struggling K to 3 readers, but there is no mandatory test-based 3rd-grade retention gate; promotion is local.
