Phonemic awareness
Hearing and playing with the individual sounds in spoken words.
Phonemic awareness is the ear-level skill of noticing that 'cat' is made of three sounds, /k/ /a/ /t/, and being able to blend or swap them. It is purely oral, comes before phonics, and is a strong early signal of reading readiness.
